Hi all,

Anybody know how I can calculate the field of view of my 400mm lens when combined with a DSI Pro?
Let's assume the Pro's optics equate to roughly a 6mm EP. I don't know if that's correct, but if it is does that help?

Thanks,
Dave

Assuming that your DSI pro is attached directly to the 400mm lens, the FOV (in degrees) is:

57 x (chip size in mm / focal length in mm).

The width of the DSI Pro chip contains 510 pixels, each pixel having a width of 9.6 microns.  This means that the width of the chip is 510 x 9.6 x 10-3 mm, or 4.9 mm.  So your FOV in degrees is 57 x (4.9/400), or about 0.7 degrees, in the horizontal dimension.  You can do the same calculation for the vertical, but this gives you the general idea...

Dave, Ron Wodaski has a nice FOV calculator you might want to take a look at.
It's available at: http://www.multimediamadness.net/wodaski/pick_a_camera.htm

Thanks Ted. I downloaded his minimal version and it yielded pretty much the same thing numbers that Steve gave me.
It's neat that it also has a side window that shows you what you might expect to see.

thanks again,
Dave
